Kindergartner refusing to wear seat belt

My son's new thing is fighting me whenever it's time to drive somewhere and he needs to buckle up. I don't know where this came from! He claims that the seatbelt is "squeezing him" and too uncomfortable (it is not squeezing him). We do NOT drive without buckling up, no exceptions. But, I'm tiring of this battle. Any tips on how to end this behavior? We've talked about safety...

Re: Kindergartner refusing to wear seat belt

You might want to consider buying a seat belt positioner/adjuster. They're very inexpensive and easily available online. Here's an example.

Though chances are your son isn't actually "uncomfortable" with his normal seat belt, this might be seen by him as a solution and moreso it lets him know you're trying to find a way to make this work for him while still adhering to the seat belts are non-negotiable rule. Might be worth a try!

Do Kangaroos Wear Seatbelts? is a great book to read with children. It discusses several safety topics and is a great way to open up more discussion with your son about why seatbelts are so important.

Thank you for those suggestions! I think I'll definitely look into the seatbelt adjuster as well as the book.
